Musculoskeletal Imaging

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is used to evaluate muscles, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissues of the body. We commonly use it to look for tears or inflammation of tendons, particularly in ankles, fingers, knees, and elbows. Because ultrasound is real-time, it is very helpful to see tendons as they move, and to guide injection of pain medication or steroids into the sheaths around tendons. In babies, ultrasound is used to evaluate the hips to ensure that they are not loose or dislocated.

Please note that ultrasound has not been proven helpful to evaluate whiplash injuries or other causes of back pain.

Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing. No other preparation is needed. Please do not bring young children with you as they get bored and may disrupt the exam.

What will happen during the exam?

Most musculoskeletal ultrasound studies are relatively quick and comfortable. You will be lying on your back or stomach on an examining table. A radiologist or sonographer will spread a clear gel on your skin and press the transducer firmly against the area being examined. Most examinations take less than 45 minutes.
